1949 Democratic Dialog Billed As "Ode To The Welfare State"

This prescient 1949 "Ode To The Welfare State" says it all.

  1. Thought you might be interested in the actual text of the speech that supposedly led to the "Ode", as it refers to the resistance that Thomas Jefferson faced when he made the Louisiana Purchase.  Truman was using it as a springboard to discuss his Great Society by using the analogy that the "insanity" of that purchase created St. Paul, MN where he was giving the speech.

The full text of this speech can be found here:  http://www.trumanlibrary.org/publicpapers/index.php?pid=1331&st=&st1=

"The people will not go back
to the day when their destinies were controlled by tight little groups
of selfish men who made their policies in secret and exercised economic
control over millions of people. They understand that a growing country
like ours can provide increased prosperity and greater freedom for its
citizens. They propose to see that that is done.

And with God's help it will be done." President Harry Truman, Nov 3, 1949, St. Paul, MN
