EPA Ploy To Halt Oil Drilling In West Texas To "Save" A Lizard

Species: After the harm done by the spotted owl and delta smelt, the listing of a tiny reptile as endangered may be the latest salvo in the war on domestic energy.

As Yogi Berra would say, it's deja vu all over again. If the dunes sagebrush lizard is listed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as an endangered species, another key part of the American economy will fall prey to the eco-extremist mantra that every little critter's well-being trumps that of the American people and economy.

Last December, the Fish and Wildlife Service announced that the lizard, a three-inch-long reptile native to the American Southwest, "faces immediate and significant threats due to oil and gas activities and herbicide treatments" and initiated the process to get it listed under the Endangered Species Act.

In 2002, the Center for Biological Diversity first petitioned to have the lizard, originally considered a subspecies of the common sagebrush lizard, listed as endangered. The Bush administration delayed consideration for six years. Last year, the Obama administration put it back on the fast track.

Sarah Palin: '2012 can't come soon enough'

By Sarah Palin

Is it really any surprise that oil and gas prices are surging toward the record highs we saw in 2008 just prior to the economic collapse? Despite the President’s strange assertions in his press conference last week, his Administration is not a passive observer to the trends that have inflated oil prices to dangerous levels. His war on domestic oil and gas exploration and production has caused us pain at the pump, endangered our already sluggish economic recovery, and threatened our national security.

The evidence of the President’s anti-drilling mentality and his culpability in the high gas prices hurting Americans is there for all to see. The following is not even an exhaustive list:

ENERGY: "The Obama administration's policy is study forever, drill never."

Energy: The brightest hope for America's energy independence has been shut down by an Interior Department that says it wants to review the rules for leases. It really wants to kill off oil altogether.
The game is this: Say that you want to find domestic oil and gas in a "smart" way, so you have to study things for a while.

Then let enviros tie you up in court to block what you really don't want to do anyway, increase America's supply of domestic energy, keeping jobs and money here.

On Tuesday, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced that the Obama administration is going to take a "fresh look" at oil shale leasing rules put forward in 2008 by President George W. Bush to develop oil-rich land in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming.

If we halt oil drilling, which of these oil byproducts do you want to live without?

President Obama says that oil is the "energy of the past."  That will certainly be true if he refuses to lift the drilling moratorium.  If Obama succeeds in diminishing our supply, this link lists just a few of the products we may have to give up.

Oil: The Energy of the Future

By Robert J. Samuelson
Investor's Business Daily

The Age of Oil continues; we need to deal with it.

The upheaval in Egypt reminds us of lessons that, despite decades of warnings, Americans have consistently sidestepped: the United States and the rest of the world will depend on oil for the indefinite future; global oil markets remain hostage to political crises that cannot be predicted or controlled; and we have not taken the prudent steps that would reduce — though not eliminate — our vulnerability to catastrophic oil interruptions.

Just what Egypt's crisis will do to oil markets is, as yet, unclear. Driven by cold weather and strong demand from developing countries, oil prices were already increasing before Egyptians took to the streets.

Yesterday, Senators Jim Webb (D-VA) and Mark Warner (D-VA) wrote a stinging letter to Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar over his most recent delay on offshore drilling, this time for an area off the coast of Virginia estimated to have 130 million barrels of oil and over one trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

The announcement of delay against which the Virginia Senators are arguing came from the Minerals Management Service in a meeting that was behind closed doors and off limits to the press.

Abstract: Conventional wisdom holds that offshore oil and gas production harms the surrounding environment. This blanket "wisdom" ignores the fact that the largest source of marine hydrocarbon pollution is offshore natural oil seepage. It also ignores the fact that offshore oil production has lowered the amount of oil released into the ocean by reducing natural oil seepage, especially in areas with active offshore oil seeps, such as California's Santa Barbara coast. This Heritage Foundation analysis cites studies, developments, and biological facts that demonstrate often-overlooked benefits of offshore oil and gas production.

Slow-Walking U.S. Energy Security

Energy: Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced Monday that his agency would look into drilling for oil in the Atlantic soon. It sounds good. But a glimpse at the strategy suggests Salazar's real aim is to block drilling.
